A hidden gem – Villa Platamone

Villa Platamone might just be the best kept secret of Lake Como and that’s why I’m so thrilled to be able to share it with you!
Hidden behind impressive wrought-iron gates and a park with beautiful old trees, this historical villa right in the middle of Como is almost invisible from the outside and therefore guarantees absolute privacy.
It was built in the 1820’s by architect Luigi Clerichetti as a holiday lodge for the Platamone family and remained a family home up until a few years ago, when it was bought and renovated by Katy and Alex Lumelsky. Even today, the villa still maintains most of its original features (such as parts of the beautiful frescoes, furniture and pieces of art). Katy and Alex were already coming to Italy and the lake to vacation for years and by purchasing the villa they decided to create a place that they could not only share with their family and friends, but also with like-minded travellers and guests coming to visit from all over the world (during their first year they hosted guests from 40 different countries). The passion and love with which they welcome their guests is what truly makes this place one of a kind. The hotel works on a bed & breakfast basis, but is in no way what you would usually expect from a B&B. It is luxurious, elegant and up to the highest standards. Nevertheless, the atmosphere is very relaxed and laid back, making it a great holiday spot for adventurers and bonvivants alike.
Villa Platamone offers a ground floor with stunning rooms (such as the great room or winter garden), that serve as a common space for the guests, while the 1st floor is occupied by 6 wonderful and spacious suites. Thanks to the small number of rooms, the hotel never hosts more than 12 guests at a time (since children under the age of 14 are not allowed). As we went there during the week, we were actually lucky enought to have the whole villa to ourselves! Can you believe that?! It was really a dream come true. Breakfast and drinks are usually served outside or in one of the breathtaking rooms of the ground floor. But, should you wish even more privacy, just ask for a private corner away from the other guests and they will arrange that for you. The small number of rooms, combined with the vastity of the villa make this place absolutely perfect for a vacation in times of Covid-19. So don’t be afraid to visit in the next months or even weeks! With it’s big fireplace and cozy sofa Villa Platamone is also perfectly suitable for a winter getaway with friends.
As you probably all know I LOVE pink and that’s why we chose to stay at the Marchese Suite. With it’s mint wallpapers and pink furniture it had such a romantic feeling to it! We also had a big modern bathroom and a huge terrace with a gorgeous view.
The days at Villa Platamone always start with an amazing breakfast prepared with so much love by Katy. You can choose whether you want to have it outside on the patio or inside in one of the rooms. The whole meal is home cooked with seasonal ingredients and absolutely DELICIOUS (especially the bruschetta with tomatoes and mozzarella!!).
For lunch and dinner Katy and Alex will recommend the best restaurants in the area. Our favourite was Bella Vista. As the name says, the view is absolutely breathtaking! The food is really yummy (please make sure to try the tagliatelle with duck ragout – A MUST) and the prices super fair!
If you’re looking to visit the lake, the location of the villa is ideal: you can reach the old town of Como with just a short walk and all the other destinations by boat or by car (you can park at the villa for free, another big plus!). There is lots of things to see and do in the area, but my number 1 recommendation would be Villa del Balbianello (which you might all know from the James Bond movie Casino Royale). You can get there either by boat or on foot and guided tours of the villa are available. The main highlight is definitely the gardens, just see for yourselves:
If instead you want to spend more time at Villa Platamone, you can enjoy the pool outside, have some fun at the gym or relax in the Finnish sauna.
Verdict: A true home away from home! I would recommend this special hotel to anyone who wants to experience a new and different kind of vacation. One where you are immersed in history and forget the frantic world on the outside. With Katy and Alex I am leaving you in very good hands 😉 So just enjoy la dolce vita!
Lots of love,
